Week One: Team Building6/19/2017 The Tired-A-Lot summer studio teaches local teens how to improve their neighborhood through design. Our team this year consists of a design councilor, Kristoffer Roxas, to teach the kids about design and lead them in investigating what it is the community needs. Our build councilor, Brianna Trapp, will assist in taking the design by the kids, and bring it to fruition. Most importantly, our program director, Rena Bradley, bringing us all together and keeps the councilors and kids on schedule, she also does all the behind the scenes magic that makes this camp possible.

Meet the Campers: Larresha6/19/2017 Larresha aspires to work in computer science and to use her creativity to help her community. She is inspired by Helen Keller; like this historical figure, she deals with some vision limitations but uses her great perseverance to work even when it’s hard and earn high grades in school. Through her determination and hard work, Larresha strives to be the best that she can be.
When you graduate, what field do you want to work in? I plan to major in computer science. What skills will you bring to the summer studio? The skills I will bring into the summer studio is my creativity. I love letting my creative juices flow. After I complete this program I would like to see if there are other ways I can help my community. Who has inspired you? The person who has inspired me is Helen Keller. She was faced with many challenges, like being deaf and blind, but she did not let that hold her back. I can relate to her because I am blind in my right eye, but I don't let it hold me back either. I still read tons of books because I love them and I overcome my headaches form it. I still make honor roll even though it takes extra time to study. I still strive to be the best that I can be. How would you describe the color yellow to a blind person? I would describe the color yellow as being a sweet flavor like biting into an orange. I would also describe yellow as being shocked; the color sneaks up on you.

Meet the Campers: Sam6/19/2017 Sam has a strong background in digital graphic design and Microsoft Office, among other computer programs. He would be delighted to pursue a career in another country. This creative young man is looking forward to working with new people as a graphic designer. When you graduate, what field do you want to work in? When I graduate high school, I plan to major (and work) in a graphic designer's typical environment. I feel as though this is the best option for me because it lets me free my inner artist in a professional manner and integrates my fondness of computers. The work is a "good busy" and has the potential to create great interactions with new people across the globe. I feel as though this program will let me dip my toe into an alternate beginning.
What skills will you bring to the summer studio? The skills I have are just a few steps to my goal. Hopefully, with this experience I will be able to add a few strengths to shape me for the outside world. I am certified in Print & Digital Media Publication using Adobe InDesign and in Graphic Design & Illustration using Adobe Illustrator. I have also worked and become familiar with Microsoft Office and Google Drive, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, etc. I feel as though these skills could broaden numerous opportunities for me to obtain my goal. How would you describe the color yellow to a blind person? The way I would describe the color yellow to a blind person would be as a delightful feeling you would get on a beautiful summer's day or the cheerful ring of a child’s laughter.

Meet the Campers: Gabe6/19/2017 Gabe’s creativity, passion for art, and desire to serve others have led him toward a high-school internship at Wunderkammer. He has a deep appreciation of teamwork and the ways in which a team project can be “greater than the sum of its parts.” With the experience he gains at camp, he wants to continue making his own neighborhood a better place to live and care even more effectively for the outside of his home. When you graduate, what field do you want to work in? Interior design, microbiology.
What skills will you bring to the summer studio? The skills I bring to camp are the following: A creative mind, diligent work ethic, a passion for beauty and art, and a desire to serve others. I have always found people to be fascinating, and I really like getting to serve others. As an intern at Wunderkammer, I learned so much about design and I'm excited to put that into use. With the experience I gain from camp, I want to continue to make my own neighborhood better. My mom allows me to be responsible for the outside of our home. It will be beneficial when I can put my camp experience to use at home. What is your favorite designed object or space in Fort Wayne, and why? My favorite space is Wunderkammer. There is not just one person who created it, but rather a collection of style, talent, perspectives, and personalities. To watch many come together to create such an important and impressive space encourages me to work as a team and keep my mind open to others' opinions. The beauty each person created is magnificent when taking the view as a whole, like the saying, "the sum is greater than its parts." There is peace in that space where people can be themselves and (have) time to reflect as well as meet new people and expand their perspective. In one tweet, how would you describe the color yellow to a blind person? Yellow is bright like the sun, zesty like a lemon, and the feeling of hope. |
