Day 4 Tired-A-Lot Spring Break Camp4/5/2018 Here we are at day 4 of the Tired-A-Lot Spring Break Camp and the crew has made tremendous progress! The group of "campers" have identified the assets and challenges of their neighborhood as well as the community at large, explored the power of story telling through art, participated in an array of team building exercises, and collaborated to come up with a powerful and beautiful mural that respects and reflects each participant's input. The camp culminates on day 5, Friday April 6, at Bridge of Grace Ministries where neighbors have been invited for lunch and to celebrate with the Tired-A-Lot crew as the community mural is unveiled.

Day 3 Tired-A-Lot Spring Break Camp4/4/2018 Students didn't seem to notice that day 3 of Spring Break camp started out with snow! After breakfast and devotions - which included a great team building exercise involving experiencing what it is to be a part of something that is bigger than one person's contribution, the students got to work on reviewing their ideas from day two and discussing how those ideas could fuse together to create one mural that told the story of their neighborhood. It was a great experience to watch the students determine what their collective message was and how that message would be visually displayed. Once that was done, they went to work on putting that image on paper, deciding what their "canvas" would be for their mural and determining how they would convert their 11" x 17" image to a 3 paneled triptych measuring roughly 8'x25'!
Once the details were worked out, we set off to the hardware store to get all the needed supplies. Picking out paint colors was no small task! By the time we got back to the "camp site" there was barely time to get the canvas (3 wood doors from the hardware) ready to prime for day 4 - painting the mural!

Day 2 Tired-A-Lot Spring Break Camp4/3/2018 The rain on day two of Tired-A-Lot Spring Break camp, didn’t stop the students from having fun and getting to work! On Tuesday, the students took part in some activities that began to lay the groundwork for them to tell the story of their neighborhood through the murals they will be creating later in the week. One such activity entailed identifying obstacles that get in the way of the students being their best selves, and discussing how they overcome those obstacles. We then extended that idea to identify how to overcome obstacles that the neighborhood faces in being the best that it can be for its residents. Students used blocks to creatively and collaboratively come up with solutions to a set of prescribed situations. The students then participated in a “mind-mapping” exercise to get them zeroing in on how they would be depicting the story of their community through their art. After lunch, we embarked on a field trip to look at murals throughout the city. The students were given various assignments to evaluate the murals and utilize what they learned to create their own works of art. Stay tuned in to see what these creative young people come up with to tell the story of their community through art!

Day one of Tired-A-Lot Spring Break camp 2018 was a productive one. With the goal of using art to tell a story about the Mount Vernon Park Neighborhood, high school students attending the Tired-A-Lot Spring Break day camp are workiing with local architects and designers to help develop their problem-solving and design skill-sets as they make a difference in their community!
On Day one, students and staff spent time getting to know one another and exploring the profound ways in which our environment shapes who we are and how we feel about ourselves and those around us. After a few ice-breaking activities and breakfast in the morning, we headed out to our local news station WPTA to find how news outlets choose the news they share, and to see how the way in which we tell our stories in the media can play a part in shaping our community. Then it was back to Bridge of Grace – home camp site - to conduct interviews with community members to determine how they feel about their neighborhood and explore ways to make it the best it can be. After processing what we learned from our interviews, we completed a site assessment- walking around the neighborhood identifying challenges and assets of the area in preparation for the upcoming activities in the week ahead! o edit.
