Week 2, Day 16/18/2018 And we back! Week 2 began with a 96 degree day... perfect weather for an outside community event, right? Luckily, the lot we chose offered lots of shade and the weather compromised with a nice breeze. Together, the campers and counselors set up tables and chairs in one of the lot possibilities for building in Mount Vernon Park, setting a space for the community to gather and listen to the campers present what they observed about the neighborhood (strengths and weaknesses) and their ideas for how to make it even better by building on a strength or meeting a need. With the hot weather, only two members of the neighborhood showed up-- but the campers presented as if to a full room. Afterwards, the campers and counselors debriefed on how the event and presentations went, and discussed the feedback they received from the audience. Check out the slideshow of photos below for a glimpse into the campers' first major presentation day.

Meet the Counselors: Jordyn6/15/2018 Jordyn is a senior communications major at Milligan College, who grew up in Fort Wayne and moved to Bolivia as a high schooler. She is our Communications & Marketing counselor for the 2018 Tired-a-Lot Summer Studio.
Q: What drew you towards the Tired-a-Lot Summer Studio? A: Having grown up in the Fort Wayne area, I was looking for a summer job here that would allow me to build my communications and media skills-- and then I found Tired-a-Lot! This camp is doing the amazing work of addressing needs in the community, while at the same time raising up a super cool group of teenagers as leaders who will hopefully continue to change the narrative wherever they go. I get to document them as they do this work, as well as tell this camp's story, and I'm thankful for the opportunity. Q: What's a fun fact about you? A: As long as I have good people around me, I will do just about any crazy thing for the sake of a good story. While I was living in Bolivia, I went on a few-day trip down the river in the jungle region in a dugout canoe; one night we accidentally set up camp on a shore lovingly referred to as "Panther Beach," named for the number of panther attacks that happened on that shore. Needless to say, we all slept lightly that night. Q: What are you favorite accomplishments/projects that you've completed so far as a journalist? A: I've had the opportunity to serve as a reporter and editor on my college's student-run newspaper, which has taught me so much about interviewing, writing, and managing that process. Probably my favorite project that I've worked on, though, is a short film I helped collect footage for in Yangon, Myanmar, of ministry that a church I was interning for was doing in that city. Q: What goals do you hope to achieve in this field? A: As a journalist--and more specifically, a storyteller--I hope to someday work in this role for a non-profit organization that is actively effecting change in the world, especially fighting some sort of injustice such as human trafficking or violence against minority groups. I hope to use storytelling as both a bridge among people groups and cultures, and as a catalyst to spur this change forward.

Meet the Counselors: Justina6/14/2018 Justina is a junior architecture major at Howard University, from Spanish Town, Jamaica. She is our Build counselor for the 2018 Summer Studio.
Q: What drew you towards the Tired-a-Lot Summer Studio? A: I was drawn towards the Tired-a-Lot Summer Studio because I loved the idea of exposing teenagers to design as not only a possible career path but also a way for them to improve their community. I also love to travel and do new things so there’s always a first time for everything! Q: What's a fun fact about you? A: I can’t swim. Q: What made you want to be an architect? A: I wanted to become an architect because I’ve always been interested in art and wanted to choose a career that didn’t feel like work and always allowed me to be creative. I love that architecture affects the way people function and has the ability to create spaces which can improve lives. Q: What are your greatest design/architectural accomplishments so far? What is your favorite project you’ve completed to date? A: My greatest design accomplishment so far would be designing container homes for a architecture firm I recently worked with. I’m interested in sustainable design and low cost housing so it was exciting to create designs which I think could be used in Jamaica to alleviate homelessness while promoting sustainability through recycling. Q: What design/architectural goals do you still hope to achieve? A: I hope to return the knowledge and skills I have learnt throughout my education and here at Tired-a-Lot to better the lives of those in my country through architecture.
