W4 D5: Actors and Builders7/14/2017 Today, N'gozi Rogers- a local television producer and founder of telemarketing agency: QuestNcreate Marketing- visited the Tired a Lot Studio to teach our campers valuable lessons about composition, story-telling and presentation. Afterward our campers even tried their hand at producing a narrative for their own commercial to promote their project. (As we recall, aliens were a BIG part of the script!)
In the afternoon it was back to building! We worked on adding some finishing touches to "Section C" of our stage and began the preparation work necessary to build "Section D." With only 2 days left before our community presentation, its crunch time!

W4 D4: Kids The Builders7/13/2017 Today the kids started building the prototype that will be presented on the lot. We had many challenges with cutting hard wood, wet wood, and leveling issues. The kids were able to work through the problems together, and come out stronger than before. By the end of day one the roof portion of our prototype is finished and out stage is about 40% done. We cant wait to see what they look like together.

W4 D3: Supplies7/12/2017 This morning the bench build was finally completed. With this being the first full scale item we built, we used what we learned to plan our prototype build for the Smith St lot.
Any project, no matter how small, can be tough to build without a plan. So we sat down to brainstorm our list of supplies as well as our construction schedule. The community is itching to see what our kids have been up to so we want to make sure we get as much done as efficiently as possible. Once our plan and schedule were all set, we headed to our local hardware store to pick up the things we needed!

W4 D2: Meeting Time7/11/2017 Today we made even more progress on our camper-designed bench and presented our ideas to the zoning staff of Allen County, Indiana and Community Development Staff of City of Fort Wayne to learn about the process of making their vision for the vacant lot a reality!
Our campers did a great job presenting their work and learned: why zoning exists, what land-uses are allowed "as-of-right" for our vacant lot, and the process of seeking a special use permit. We even got some great tips regarding the next steps we should take to begin bringing our project to fruition. Thanks to everyone at the Allen County Zoning Office and the Fort Wayne Department of Community Development for their time and encouragement!

W4 D1: Out on the River7/10/2017 Our morning today was super productive as we continued to work on the bench that was started Friday.
Later in the day, we were in for a treat! Alec Johnson (of Fort Wayne Parks and Rec) and Dan Wire (of the Tri-State Watershed Alliance) took us out on a tour of Fort Wayne's St. Mary's, St. Joseph, and Maumee rivers. What a great time to learn about our city's history and and future development ideas and efforts. |
