THE STUDIO

Our Program

Picture
In the Tired-a-Lot Design Studio we want our campers to not only transform their environments but their perspectives. We want them to see their neighborhoods as places that can  grow and change, and realize that they themselves can be agents of change within their own communities.

The 2018 Tired-a-Lot Summer Studio will focus on Mount Vernon Park, a neighborhood in Southeast Fort Wayne Indiana, that has
  • Residents who desire to build relationships with one another,
  • A growing student population with limited access to the arts (and creative career fields), and…
  • More than 15 vacant lots scattered throughout the community.

Organized by Bridge of Grace CMC,  for the youth of Fort Wayne (and especially the youth of Mount Vernon Park), the Tired-a-Lot Summer Studio will foster civic engagement and resourcefulness by engaging students in the process of identifying and creating design solutions-- using materials like pallets and tires-- to address a community need of their choosing. During the summer, high-school students from Mount Vernon Park and greater Fort Wayne will participate in a 5-week design studio, whose final outcome will be the reactivation of 1-2 vacant green lots in the neighborhood.

Resources

Bridge of Grace and the Tire-a-Lot believe strongly in sharing our lessons learned. In the interest of duplicating our success, and contribute to our community’s collective knowledge base we produce “field guides” to share our processes, tools, and best practices. (Guides for each of our vacant lot activation projects will be uploaded below as they become available.)

After our first camp, campers volunteered to help build Park 2 Park - an obstcale course that had been designed the previous summer by LTU architecture major, Nick Geers.   Check out this field guide to learn more about the project and how we engaged our community in the process.
